Planning For Real

Planning For Real is a method of engaging people in a process to decide the future development of their own areas.

Using a map of the area people can actually see the layout and decide what services they would like to see in their own locality.

In Mullaghmatt the children of the area were the drivers of the campaign and they built a 3D model of the area.

A full election campain was launched assisted by the staff at  Teach na nDaóine and anchored by local people seeking changes.  The children established an election committee known as "The Sunflower Coalition" to address the residents concerns.  The opposition candidate was called "The Couch Potato".

"The Sunflower Coalition"

  • Assisted in a survey of the area.
  • Built a 3D model of the estate.
  • Established an election directorate.
  • Planned an election campaign.

There were many challenges to be dealt with in the area, mostly relating to environmental aspects of the estate.  Community consultation encouraged residents to take a pro-active hand in finding solutions to these problems.

A five year plan for the estate was produced with assistance from Mentor (Firm of consultants) and this plan was adopted as the election campaign of "The Sunflower Coalition".  All aspects of life in the estate were examined including community safety, environmental and aesthetic improvements.

Poling day was a huge sucess with over 70% of households casting their votes.  "The Sunflower Coalition" won a resounding victory.
